Mordprotokoll (Murder Protocol), 2001 (redesign of Mordprotokoll by Gerd Helbig)
A daily chronicle of murders reported in Washington DC in the year 1993. In my illustrated book violence is depicted through abstraction. Each written account is set in Courier (a monospaced typeface) and the pages are systematically sliced in horizontal and vertical directions, making reference to the institutional shredding of documents. In this book, loose pages sit in manilla folders and are organized in monthly installments. No content is ever cut out. The details can always be read in full. However, that reading experience is made tactile, malleable and uneasy. This first image is a test experiment: How can I represent the page as a victim of violence? I decided that for the book the slicing needed to be less emotional. It is an organized procedure (see layout diagram below) and a systematic treatment, in reference to the process of investigation, the institution, archives, office documents and filing systems.
